To combat global climate change, significant changes in many sectors are required on a global scale. However, individual efforts in sustainability cannot be underestimated and small actions by each one of us matter.
Green Swap is a series to encourage small yet positive acts/swap in reducing waste from our daily routine. We have and can continue to make strides in eco-consciousness by committing to waste reduction. I encourage you to look around your home and see how you can reduce products consumption and support brands that are sustainable. Here is a list that keeps me on track:
Need or want: Wanting a product and needing it are two very different things. Ask yourself that simple question before you make a purchase.
Second hand: Can you shop at your local thrift store or hunt it on Facebook Marketplace for this product?
Shop locally: Support local businesses that are committed to ethical practices. (handmade products, etc)
Research: Do your research on the product to learn about the brand's mission, ethical practices before your purchase. Don't be shy, you can even message the company to learn more about them too! I love connecting with small businesses over social media and ask questions that way. I find that small business owners are more incline to communicate with you directly.
Packing: Is the packing recyclable and compostable?
Manufacturing: How are the products manufactured? Is the company transparent about the working conditions of its workers? Are they committed to renewable energy sources in their production process?
No Plastic: Plastic has a long lifespan and is limited in recyclability. They also release compounds that may have a negative impact on human health.
Single Use Items: We are introducing a huge volume of waste that may not be able to break down naturally within a human life span.
Carbon Emission: How much carbon is being emitted for your purchase? Are you driving a long distance to get this product or can you get it on foot? How far is the product traveling to you and what is the method of transportation? (by air, ground-transportation)
