Traveling Mindfully

I am finding myself in the air more than ever and have adapted to some habits that keep me traveling mindfully with no stress. Stress-free travel requires planning and preparation, and before I take off I turn to my checklist (download here!) to make sure I don't miss anything important while I pack and I stick to my priority list to keep me staying mindful when I'm away from home and my routine. Personally, the list of things I prioritize stays the same if I'm traveling for business or leisure and they are always travel light, stay active & healthy, and eliminate waste. Here is how I achieve them all so I can take-off with ease.

 

TRAVELING LIGHT

 

I pride on packing light and avoid checking bags. I always only travel with a carry-on regardless of how long my trip may be by packing only my essentials! Here is how I do it:

  • Roll your clothing instead of folding them when packing

  • Pack outfits I can wear more than once

  • Wear the heavy shoes on the plane so you are losing space in your carry-on

  • Travel tolietaries (I love traveling with Nelson Naturals toothpaste tablets and reusing travel size tolietaries by filling them with my essentials. Travel size bottles can be purchased at the dollar store and if you have a drug store close by you can always ask for samples too which are great to travel with!)
     

STAY ACTIVE & HEALTHY

 

I always pack my travel yoga mat or my running shoes to keep myself motivated to stay active while I travel. I always work out first thing in the morning because you never know how your day will go so before you can talk yourself out of it just do it! I never give myself excuses even when I'm traveling for work and have late night meetings, working out in the morning maintains my energy level and really helps keep me feeling energized throughout the day.

 

One thing I learned is that you can travel with dry foods so I always pack my own breakfast! I fill a mini mason jar with oatmeal and bring a pack of dried fruit as breakfast or snack. All you need is hot water and a coffee cup! Mix some of your oatmeal with dried fruit and you've got yourself a healthy breakfast without having to break the bank or resort to some unhealthy option! Breakfast is one of the most important meal of the day so be sure to start it right.

 

If you can, go to a local grocery store and buy some fresh produce. You can also have some fun with it and select local produce so you can taste test the difference in freshness! Some easy items to go with are bread, avocado, hummus, tomatoes, and fruits. That way you can make yourself some lunch or snacks at your hotel room without a kitchen!

 

ELIMINATE WASTE

 

This can be a tricky one but if eliminating waste is important to you, you prepare accordingly and anyone can do it! Here are some things to pack:

We need to stay hydrated and buying bottled water is something that can be so easily avoided so please travel with a bottle if you can! If you are a coffee or tea lover, make sure you travel with a travel mug too. I have a rule for myself, if I forget the mug with me I simply skip out on my coffee order. As for the beewax wrap, they are just game changing! You can wrap your food in them so they last longer. They barely take up any space and can be used to wrap non-food items too!
